Yamaha Motor India riding on the success of the Ray scooter is launching a new unisex scooter in 2014 to take on the segment leader Honda Activa. The company will unveil the scooter at the 2014 Auto Expo.
With current 5% share in the scooter segment, Yamaha is looking to further increase this with the launch of the Unisex scooter. The Ray scooter range has helped Yamaha post 42% rise in sales between April-September 2013.
The new scooter will be larger in dimensions and will be priced above the Ray & Ray Z. The company is looking to grow in the scooter segment and will launch new scooters in the next three years. Yamaha will have to battle the segment leader Honda Activa, Activa I, recently launched TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access. The new scooter will have to be a step above in terms of performance and features to compete with the established brands.
Yamaha has made a strong base in the premium 150cc segment and new launches could help the company become a larger player. Yamaha does not have strong products in the 100-125cc segment which form the chunk of sales in the Indian two wheeler segment.
